It’s been quite a while since I posted. Unfortunately, I’ve been spending most of my time away from technology and instead learning about paleoenvironmental research methods for my dissertation research.
Fortunately, a friend of mine just got an Android phone (whoop!!!!) and asked me what apps I suggest he install. No time better than the present to pull out my phone and take a look at the apps I use most often, and the ones I’ve installed but have yet to play with.
Geography apps (in alphabetical order)
— Use Often
- Compass
- Gas Buddy
- Google Earth
- Google Sky Map
- GPS Status
- Gaia GPS
- Maverick
- MyTracks
- OruxMaps
- Tricorder
— Sometimes
- GeoBeagle
- Google Goggles
- Maprika
- Where’s My Droid?
— Still Need to Play With
- GeoCam (I have 2 different ones)
- GeoGoggle
- GPS Essentials
- GPS Toolbox
- PeakAR
Yes, some of these apps duplicate functionality. But I’ve noticed that sometimes one will start crashing while another becomes more stable. So, because I never know which update feels like behaving best out in the field, I “carry” several on me =). For instance, OruxMaps changed their interface since the last time I used it, startling me when I launched the app to do some geotagging for my fieldwork. Because I was scouting locations with my advisor, I didn’t have time to explore the app (that and I had limited battery because my solar charger decided it didn’t want to work anymore). So, up came Maverick, geotagged and photoed the spots, and didn’t have to worry about trying to download an app where there was no cell signal. Besides, unlike everything else in my backpack, apps don’t weigh anything =D
Other useful apps (just to round out the list a bit)
- Evernote (how I love you)
- Dropbox
- ASTRO File Manager
- CamScanner
- Droideley
- Due Today
- GTasks
- RealCalc
- SketchBook Mobile
- Google Translate
- Documents to Go
- Grocery King (price book)
- Lookout
- GO Launcher (alternative desktop/app launcher)
- Jorte (Calendar)
- Agenda Widget (to link in Google Calendar, Google Tasks, and ToodleDo)
- Dolphin Browser
- HDR Camera
- RepliGo Reader (for marking up PDFs)
